Stress Is a Constant Companion for Women
Ask Beth Donnelly of Amherst what stresses her out the most, and you'll get an immediate answer.
"Number one is bickering between the kids," says the 41-year-old mother of three active boys, Shane, 9; Kyle, 7 1/2, and Ryan, 3. "That's absolutely number one, because there's nothing I can do about it, I can't stop it; that's just the way kids are."
Beth Donnelly has it exactly right, say stress experts.
"The worst kinds of stress are the stressors we can't control and are forced to live with, " says Dr. Davis I. Kurss, an obstetrician and gynecologist who is director of the Women's Wellness Center.
Whether the stress is caused by the normal sibling rivalry of three healthy, happy youngsters or something more serious, such as financial, emotional or health crises, women seem to shoulder more of the stress burden, Kurss says.
"Invariably, over the last 20 years of taking care of women, I've found that men do what they have to do, and women do what they have to do PLUS," he says.

How Emotional Is Too Emotional?
Emotion isn't a bad thing in the workplace. But you do need to know when showing feeling is OK -- and when you need to rein it in.
Recently, I participated in a panel discussion about how women can help themselves, and each other, advance in the workplace. The panel was sponsored by a major insurance company as part of its yearly conference for female brokers and between the three panel members we'd done everything from cocktail waitressing to working as a White House aide to climbing Mt. Everest. A good portion of the discussion was devoted to Q&A, and, at one point, a woman raised her hand to ask something I hear from audience members again and again.
"What can women do about being too emotional at work?"
Our responses varied from the practical -- if you're going to cry, get into your office fast and shut the door -- to the more general -- most workplace decisions are made in order to further a company or a product, not as personal attacks. All of which I agree with. But I also fo...

Going Bold
I’m at the midpoint of my life, but there’s nothing halfway about how I want to live right now. How many of you are feeling the same way? It really doesn’t interest me to look back at where I’ve been or stress about what lies ahead. I’m pumped to live more boldly right now and pull out all the stops to make this moment as big and juicy as it’s meant to be.
And as I look at the world now, it calls for bold talk, bold acts and for women with big, bold hearts to make a difference. We’re hungry for women’s ways of resolving conflict, finding common ground and building peaceful communities. When just one of us steps out to express our energy and passion, the entire world gets a bit bolder, saner and more alive.
Recently, I knew, without a doubt, that I had to go bold. My soul strutted every time I thought of going to Africa to support African women in their climb out of poverty, growing my soul in the journey. So I spent time with the amazing women of BeadforLife in Uganda, refug...

Tough Talk
Many women are terrified of conflict, but avoiding a difficult conversation with a colleague because it makes you feel uncomfortable is both unprofessional and unfair. Here's how to prepare for -- and lessen the discomfort of -- touchy situations.
Margaret considered herself a first class professional in a field where keeping your priorities straight and keeping your cool were both of the essence.
She worked as an emergency medical technician, the only woman in an Oakland, Calif., firehouse, until Jamie, another young nurse, joined the crew. Jamie seemed good-hearted and committed and, as the senior woman on the scene, Margaret willingly took her under her wing. But over time it became clear that Jamie's meek personality was getting in the way. She was afraid to take on many of the responsibilities necessary to be an EMT, like driving the ambulance or staying alone with a critical patient. Margaret knew she should say something but, since the conversation would have been awkward and...

Why Women Are Better NetWeavers
What is NetWeaving and how does it differ from traditional Networking?
NetWeaving is, in many ways, an altruistic spinoff form of networking. It follows the Golden Rule of, “What goes around will come back around.” In the long run, the benefits and outcomes from NetWeaving will almost always exceed those of the more traditional, “What’s in it for me?” (WIIFMe) networking.
What’s wrong with “traditional” WIIFMe Networking?
Here is a common situation:
You go to a networking or business reception or meeting and have nice conversations with several people. You exchange business cards with great intentions to reconnect based on a common interest or possible strategic connection identified at the time. But then, as you get back to your office -- to the piles of emails and phone messages, meetings, etc. – you get caught up in your current work. A few days go by and no one follows up. A week goes by, then two weeks. Pretty soon, you come back across those business cards from the energiz...

Every Woman's Secret Weapon
You don't need scientists to tell you that working out is healthy—you can feel and see the difference it makes in your body. But when it comes to exercise and staving off cancer, it's what you can't see that matters. The effects of exercise are so powerful that being overweight and sedentary are believed to play a role in 25 percent of cancer cases worldwide, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France. "Exercise is one of the most important things women can do to reduce their risk of developing the most common cancers," says Anne McTiernan, M.D., director of the Prevention Center at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. "You don't need to be an athlete to reap the benefits. The best exercises are the ones that you'll enjoy and work into your daily routine."
Even more encouraging: It's never too late to start a program.
The many ways working out reduces your risk
Use any method you like to break a sweat. The key is to spend about h...

A Guide To Screenings For Every Decade Of Your Life
When should you have your first mammogram?
When should you start being concerned about osteoporosis?
It's never too early to know the answers to health questions like these so that you can know how -- and when -- to act. We've created a decade-by-decade guide to health issues to keep an eye out for, medical screenings to have, and nutritional supplements to take.
Start with these recommendations when you're in your 20s and continue down the list as you reach your golden years.
Your 20s and 30s
Keep an eye on these health issues:
• Your weight. It's good to maintain a stable weight going forward. Putting on too much of it can put you at greater risk for developing ailments such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
• Your skin. Skin cancer is on the rise in 20- and 30-something women. It's not just sun worshippers and light-complexioned people at risk -- everyday exposure can increase melanoma risk, even in those with darker complexions. Keep an eye out for enlarging moles and u...

Professional Women's Guide To Office Essentials
At long last, Democrats and Republicans agree on something: Nancy Pelosi is the best-dressed woman in Washington. Her stylish suits, paired perfectly with jewelry, are sophisticated and polished – and show the world she means business. Pelosi knows that what we wear speaks volumes about how seriously we take our jobs. The media may not be analyzing your every fashion choice, but you can bet your boss is. Read on to discover which office essentials you should keep in your closet.
Dress to Impress
The first step to dressing well is to acknowledge that your clothes send a message about your work ethic. “Whether it’s fair or not, people size you up by what you wear,” says Mary Lou Andre, fashion consultant and author of Ready to Wear (Penguin, 2004). Ironed slacks and a crisp blouse will earn the boss’s applause, while scuffed pumps and fraying sweaters will draw attention you don’t want.
Shallow as it seems, the state of your shoes affects your coworkers’ view of you. But look on the b...

Live Out Your Dreams to Teach Your Kids to Live Theirs
I have young children. Four of them to be exact since I counted them only this morning as I shuffled them into the car for school drop off. There are a lot of things I do for my kids, most of which I enjoy, some of which I don't but I do anyway. But apart from the many things I do for my children, I know my greatest responsibility is to be a wonderful role model for them. To do that means living my life in such a way that enables me to feel truly great about myself and in what I am doing with the talents I was blessed with. It means fulfilling the one true mission that we all have in life -- to do the best we can with what we have been given.
You see, ahead of everything we do for our children, what will most affect their ability to live truly successful and happy lives themselves, is who we are for them as not only mothers, but as women. From that perspective, I believe we can be far more powerful as mothers in supporting our children to fulfilling their own unique potential to rise...
